Ancient Buddhist Pagoda and Stupa, Pagan, Burma                          
The many pagodas and stupas across the Pagan landscape were built between 849 and 1287 when there existed a relatively peaceful Buddhist kingdom. This era of prosperity came to a dramatic close with the invasion by Kublai Kahn and the Mongols.
