Eating Octopus by Utagawa Toyokuni III 1857

Eating Octopus by Utagawa Toyokuni III 1857

A girl eats roasted octopus in the Tsukiji fish market (seen in the vignette at top right). She holds a cup of sake, of which a bottle is heating by the fire; her expression and the locks of hair that have escaped from her coiffure suggest that she is a little tipsy. From the series Edo meisho hyakunin bijo, "Famous Places in Edo Compared to a Hundred Beautiful Women." Each print includes a landscape vignette by Kunihisa, who lived with Toyokuni III and married his daughter.
