A Mother-In-Law by Yoshitoshi 1885
In Japan as in the West, mothers-in-law were not popular figures: this
hard-eyed woman with her cat is specifically described in the text of the
print as shutome, "mother-in-law." From a caricature series Kigen kurabe, "A
Comparison of Temperments," whose theme is the evils of drink - note the
sake-bottle shaped cartouche.
