In Japan as in the West, mothers-in-law were not popular figures: this hard-eyed woman with her cat is specifically described in the text of the print as shutome, "mother-in-law." From a caricature series Kigen kurabe, "A Comparison of Temperments," whose theme is the evils of drink - note the sake-bottle shaped cartouche.
