A Poor Student byYoshitoshi 1885

A satirical depiction of a student out carousing with a snack in one hand and a bottle of sake in the other, a vignette of lower-class life in early Meiji. From a caricature series Kigen kurabe, "A Comparison of Temperments," whose theme is the evils of drink - note the sake bottle shaped cartouche. Note also the new-fangled matches and rolling tobacco for cigarettes.
