Cherry Trees in the Yoshiwara at Night by Hiroshige Utagawa 1830

Cherry Trees in the Yoshiwara at Night by Hiroshige Utagawa 1830
Evening in Nakanocho, the main street of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter outside Edo. Each spring, blooming cherry trees were planted in raised piles of earth along Nakanocho, an occasion of much celebration. This was something of a pun, as a common slang term for the prostitutes was yozakura, "night cherry blossoms." From the series Toto meisho, "Famous Views of Edo."
