Kato Kiyomasa With a Monkey by Yoshitoshi ca. 1883

Kato Kiyomasa With a Monkey by Yoshitoshi ca. 1883

In this design from Yoshitoshi's "Courageous Warriors" series, the famous general Kato Kiyomasa approaches a monkey who holds a writing brush. Kiyomasa was a fierce and imposing man, and is usually shown heavily bearded. He was famous for killing a tiger singlehandedly, and for his brutal campaigns in Korea in the 1590s. From these he returned with the noses and ears of 70,000 enemy soldiers, the whole heads being too bulky to bring back. Here he admonishes his precocious pet.
