North American Indian pottery bowl painted with insects. These bowls were intended to be burial offerings and were ritually killed at burial with punctures to their base. It was believed this helped to release the vessel's spirit into the next world. Dating from ca. 950 A.D. in the Mimbres Style. Peabody Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA
