The head of an eagle and that of a bearded man, toppled from gigantic stone statues, lie on the snow capped summit of Nemrut Dagi (Mount Nimrod), site of a tumulus built for Antiochos I (69-34 B.C.), the first Commagene king. Several such statues of kings and gods once stood at the site which lies between
Malatya and Urfa, in eastern Turkey.
