Guillotine in Fresnes Prison After Abolition of Death Penalty
A guillotine sits in storage in Fresnes Prison, the largest prison in France, after the French government abolished the death penalty. The guillotine was originally designed to make execution more humane, but became a symbol of tyranny during the French Revolution with 40,000 beheadings during this period;

it was used in France as late as 1977.
Fresnes, Val-de-Marne Department, France
