Maori hei-tiki carved jade pendant

Maori hei-tiki carved jade pendant dating from the late 18th century. The figure probably represents the power of fertility of a  foetus, it has the original flax cord and bone toggle. In ancient times the hei-tiki was worn by chieftainesses of the highest rank, but in later years most Maori's wore one. The name 'tiki' refers to a demi god who is also the human penis.
