Detail of Celtic Witham Shield

Detail of Celtic Witham Shield. British Museum, London
Detail of the central boss of the Celtic Witham Shield showing 'rotation symmetry'. The boss is decorated with a composite coral stud, the Celts believed coral had magical qualities, with smaller ones next to it. Discovered in England the shield was either part of ceremonial armour or a votive offering, and probably dates from the 3rd century B.C.
