Ramses II reigned during the 19th dynasty of the New Kingdom (1550-1070 B.C.), a period of great pyramid building. He oversaw the building of the temples of Karnak and Abu Simbal. Examination of his body suggests he was probably in his eighties when he died. He was buried at Deir el Bahri.
