Coptic Dedication Stone at Faras Basilica in the Sudan
Twin dedication stones in Greek and Coptic were placed in the basilica built
in the late seventh to early eighth century in Faras, capitol of the
northern Nubian kingdom of Nobatia. Buried in sand for centuries, it was
excavated in the 1960 s by a Polish team as the rising waters behind the
Aswan Dam prepared to drown the site. The dedication stones are set in a
wall of ashlar and brick masonry.
